Central Regional Minister urges workers to reject illegal mining, deforestation
In a forceful appeal to the workforce of Ghana's Central Region, the Regional Minister, Ekow Panyin Eduamoah Okyere, has issued a stern call to arms against the twin environmental menaces of illegal mining, commonly known as 'galamsey,' and rampant deforestation. Speaking directly to the workers, the Minister emphasized the urgent need for a paradigm shift in their attitudes and actions concerning these destructive practices. The message was clear: the pursuit of economic gain cannot come at the expense of the region's ecological health and long-term sustainability.

Minister Okyere highlighted the devastating consequences of illegal mining, particularly its impact on water bodies and agricultural lands. The uncontrolled extraction of gold often leads to the pollution of rivers and streams with toxic substances like mercury and cyanide, rendering water sources unfit for human consumption and damaging aquatic ecosystems. Furthermore, the physical destruction of land through excavation and the accumulation of waste have rendered vast tracts of arable land unusable, severely impacting the livelihoods of farmers and the agricultural sector, which is a cornerstone of the region's economy. The Minister underscored that the short-term profits gained from galamsey are dwarfed by the long-term environmental degradation and the immense costs associated with rehabilitation efforts.

Similarly, the Minister addressed the issue of deforestation, lamenting the rapid destruction of forest cover across the Central Region. Forests play a critical role in maintaining ecological balance, regulating climate, preventing soil erosion, and preserving biodiversity. The unchecked felling of trees for timber, charcoal production, or to clear land for agriculture and mining is leading to a significant loss of these vital ecosystem services. This not only exacerbates climate change but also threatens the survival of numerous plant and animal species that depend on these forest habitats. The Minister pointed out that the destruction of these natural resources jeopardizes the future well-being of the region and its inhabitants.

In his plea, Minister Okyere urged workers to actively reject and report any involvement in or knowledge of illegal mining and deforestation activities. He stressed that collective action and a change in mindset are crucial to reversing the current trend. The government, he assured, is committed to enforcing existing laws and implementing stricter measures to curb these practices. However, he emphasized that the success of these efforts hinges on the cooperation and active participation of the very people who are often involved in or witness these activities. The Minister's address serves as a critical reminder that environmental stewardship is a shared responsibility, and the commitment of every worker is essential to safeguarding the natural heritage of the Central Region for generations to come.
