Gen Z Redefines Social Norms: The Decline of Traditional Table Etiquette
In a contemporary examination of generational attitudes, journalist Scarlett Dargan explores why Generation Z displays markedly different priorities regarding table manners compared to previous generations. The analysis reveals a fundamental shift in how younger adults perceive the relevance and importance of formal dining etiquette in modern society.

Traditional table manners have long been considered a cornerstone of social refinement and respectability, taught meticulously to children as a marker of upbringing and cultural sophistication. However, Gen Z has largely disregarded these conventions, viewing them as outdated formalities disconnected from contemporary values and priorities.

This generational divergence reflects deeper philosophical differences about what constitutes meaningful social interaction. While older generations prioritized demonstrating respect and consideration through adherence to formal rules, Gen Z emphasizes authenticity, inclusivity, and substance over stylistic adherence. From their perspective, the rules governing which fork to use or how to hold a napkin represent arbitrary barriers that can exclude rather than unite.

Several factors contribute to this shift. The rise of casual dining culture, particularly through food delivery services and eating while multitasking, has normalized informal eating practices. Social media has democratized culinary presentation, with Gen Z more concerned with how food photographs than how it is consumed according to traditional standards.

Furthermore, Gen Z's inclusive worldview challenges the gatekeeping function that table manners historically served. By rejecting formal etiquette, younger generations are rejecting the implicit class and cultural hierarchies embedded within these conventions. They view table manners enforcement as potentially exclusionary rather than unifying.

Yet this disregard is not universal. Gen Z still values politeness, respect, and consideration—they simply express these values differently. What appears to older generations as disrespect may be, from Gen Z's perspective, a more authentic and egalitarian approach to social interaction.

The debate underscores how each generation negotiates social norms differently, with younger cohorts increasingly prioritizing substantive values over formal appearance.
